Terracotta otherwise called “baked earth” is nothing but clay that is used to make tiles and decorative items. Like other clay toys and utilitarian goods, terracotta tiles are baked in a kiln or dried in the sun and are commonly reddish in color, but the color may vary according to the clay that is used. Glazed ceramic tiles are widely used during the construction of buildings. Terracotta tiles are very sturdy and waterproof.

Handmade Terracotta Tiles

The art of making terracotta tiles was known even during the times of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. However, the people of West Bengal were the first to use them in buildings. Now-a-days terracotta tiles are being used for flooring. They are eco-friendly and bacterial resistant. They also retain the warmth of the room and look great as they age. They are also very easy to be cleaned. All these facts make them popular among builders and home owners and that is why they are in huge demand today.

They are available in a range of shapes and sizes and can be laid outside in the garden, driveways and patios. When laid along the pavements, they enhance the look of any house. Terracotta tiles can also be used inside bathrooms, kitchens, entry ways and living room. Moreover, they are not cold under the feet like other flooring material.

Terracotta tiles looks wonderful when left in their natural state, but they are too porous. So, they are sealed more than once after installation. This can be done by a professional, as it is quiet a tedious process. Terracotta are inexpensive and anyone can afford them.
